Aerospace Manufacturing Conference at EMO Hannover 2011

June 2, 2011
Conference program and complementary exhibition to highlight trends in new production technologies for the sector
Prof. Berend Denkena, director of the Institute of Production Engineering and Machine Tools, promises the “New Production Technologies in the Aerospace Industry” program at EMO Hannover 2011 will provide ideas “for acquiring new information and exchanging news and views about the status of research work on an international level.”

For the first time in the eleven-year history of the event, the Institute of Production Engineering and Machine Tools (IFW) at Leibniz Hannover University will present its well regarded conference on aerospace manufacturing technologies in conjunction with this year’s EMO Hannover expo. The “New Production Technologies in the Aerospace Industry” program will take place September 22-23 in Hanover.

As was the case last year, the conference event is being co-organized by Germany’s Machining Innovations Network (MIN). “It makes us very proud to know that our conference will this year be part of the world’s biggest trade fair for the metalworking sector,” according to Professor Berend Denkena, director of the IFW. “We will be offering visitors to the EMO from the aerospace industry a top-class forum for acquiring new information and exchanging news and views about the status of research work on an international level.”

Along with metallic materials (particularly titanium and aluminum), fiber-reinforced plastics and material combinations will be addressed in the conference program. The agenda includes new machinery and production technologies, plus automation concepts in the aerospace sector, and the planning and repair of CFRP components.

The conference program’s emphasis on lightweight construction materials and their combinations is no accident: in aircraft construction, the trend toward new, light and high-strength materials and material combination continues. One example is the use of titanium alloys for an aircraft’s fuselage structure in conjunction with carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics. Such novel design choices are notable for aircraft undercarriages, too, presenting a processing and fabricating challenge for aircraft manufacturers and also for tool and machine tool producers.

Aircraft and aerospace OEMs demand tool concepts for drilling and milling high-temperature-resistant metals and composite materials, new machine tool concepts for cost-efficient machining of titanium, and strategies for 5-axis machining. With these requirements, the aviation sector is evolving into a crucial driver for technological developments covering the whole gamut of metal-cutting processes.

On the first day of the conference, Thursday September 22, following the plenary lectures, internationally acknowledged experts from the industrial sectors and the academic research community will be presenting comprehensive approaches in two parallel sessions, entitled “Machine Technologies for Metallic Materials” and “Automation and CFRP Production,” The day concludes with a shared evening event on the exhibition grounds.

Friday, September 23, begins with a plenary lecture on “Up-to-the-future materials for aerospace applications,” before parallel Sessions Three and Four focus on “Manufacturing Technologies for CFRP and Titanium” and “Process Planning and Repair of CFRP Components.”

To supplement the conference, the Machining Innovations Network at the EMO Hannover 2011 will be presenting a special show entitled “Milestones in cost-effective titanium component production.” It will showcase current highlights in metal-cutting for titanium structural components, the results of innovative composite-material projects and technologically outstanding approaches.

“New Production Technologies in the Aerospace Industry” takes place September 22, 9:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m., followed by the evening event; and September 23 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The venue is the Hannover Exhibition Grounds, Hall 1 and Hall 3a. The conference will be presented in German and English. For further information and to register, please contact Dipl.-Ing. EMO Hannover 2011, the biennial trade event for machine tools and metalworking technology will take place September 19-24 in Hanover, Germany. Its core attractions will concern cutting and forming machine tools, production systems, high-precision tools, automated material flows, computer technology, industrial electronics and accessories, but the planners also promise presentations on a range of topical issues and emerging technologies, and subjects that concern a range of manufacturing sectors.
