Germany's President Horst Kohler To Open International Metalworking Trade Fair Germany's President Horst Kohler will officially open EMO Hannover 2007, an international metalworking and industrial goods fair, on September 17th. According to the German Machine Tool Builders' Association (VDW), this is the first time a German president has attended the bi-annual event and VDW considers Kohler's participation a powerful signal underlining the importance of manufacturing technology and of the small-to-medium-sized industrial sector, both of which characterize EMO Hannover. Caterpillar Plans To Build Diesel Engines in China Caterpillar Inc. said it plans to build 100,000 state-of-the-art small and medium diesel engines per year in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, China. Caterpillar has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with the Wuxi National High-Tech Industrial Development Zone outlining a significant multi-year investment to develop and manufacture Perkins and Caterpillar branded engines in Wuxi. The first of the planned engine operations in Wuxi will focus on production of the Perkins 400 Series, three and four-cylinder diesel engines. Starrett Acquires Kinemetric Engineering The L.S. Starrett Co. a supplier of precision measuring tools and equipment based in Athol, Mass., has acquired Kinemetric Engineering, LLC of Laguna Hills, Calif. for $2.3 million. Mori Seiki Extends Warranty On New Machines Mori Seiki announced in late June that it will provide a two-year warranty on all machine tools installed after April 1, 2007. Under the new policy, all machine parts will be replaced free of charge for the first two years of the machine's life, while service and maintenance will be provided without cost for one year.
