CBN Inserts for Case-Hardened Steels

This newest addition to the Seco Tools Inc. (www.secotools.com) family of low-content CBN inserts — CBN160C — is available in single and multi-tipped brazed formats and all typical styles.

With its near diamond hardness, the company said CNB160C balances CBN content, grain size, binder, coating and edge micro geometry to produce an insert for high speed and heavy interrupted machining of case-hardened steels (45 HRc to 65 HRc) with surface finishes that nearly eliminate the need for grinding. These materials are often used in the automotive industry where limited or unmanned, high-volume production of parts is commonplace.

The inserts feature a Ti(Si)N “C” coating that improves wear resistance and increases tool life and allows for high speeds and feeds. The company said downtime also is reduced because there is less need to inspect tool wear and fewer indexing/tool changes are required.
