Herman Schmidt Co.'s HSM magnetic workholding chucks for high-speed machining centers use special magnetic-circuit layouts. The rare-earth magnets used in the chucks reportedly provide holding forces 4 X greater than fine-pole magnets and pack double the strength of standard pole magnets.
